Today, around the world, the environmental component is the basis of urban planning . The most successful modern cities are abandoning carbon emissions, switching to alternative transport, and developing green technologies. At the same time, over the last 30 years no comprehensive document has been adopted in Kyiv that would really regulate the environmental situation.

Kyiv's environmental strategy 2030 most fully analyzes the capital's environmental problems and suggests specific ways to solve them.

Eco-strategy is a public initiative that should be officially approved by the city council and become a roadmap for the ecological development of Kyiv in the coming years.

Clean water

We consume 663 million liters of water every day

Water problems
solved by Ecostrategy 2030

Lack of topical information about the amount and the condition of the city’s water bodies, as well as the open-access of Kyivites to it

Discharges into water bodies of domestic and surface effluents without treatment

Eutrophication of water as a result of biogenic concentration (nitrogen, phosphorus) and organic substances

Significant hydromorphological alteration  of water bodies

Pollution of the water and coastal strips
with household solid waste

Unauthorized construction and economic activity
on the shores
of reservoirs, sanitary protection zones
of water supply sources

The critical condition
of city sewers
that is close to the emergency situation

A high percentage of wearout of buildings and water supply and sewerage networks

Clean air and clean energy

In 2020 Kyiv has repeatedly been among the ten most polluted cities in the world

Air problemssolved by Ecostrategy 2030

Lack of a modern air quality monitoring system and a single data center

Air pollution from emissions from vehicles and industrial
enterprises

The concentration of pollutants exceeding
the maximum allowable norms

Lack of reasonable city planning, organization of urban space on the principles of sustainable mobility, and approaching infrastructure to the place of residence of Kyivites

Increased risks for health and life of citizens, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases

Unregulated increase in the number of vehicles in the city and the slow development of the road network, interchanges

Imperfect traffic management and lack of priority for public transport

Obsolete public transport, lack of municipal buses
with electric motors. Low popularization of public transport.

Smog and combustion products due to fires
in ecosystems of Kyiv and the regionі

Lack of incentives for business and low level of introduction
of renewable energy technologies

Green areas and biodiversity

Last year Kyiv ranked 100th in the ranking of the greenest cities in the world HUGSI

Problems of green areas
solved by Ecostrategy 2030

The tendency to build up free areas by reducing green areas

Reduction of vegetation and lack of systematic care
for greeneries

Degradation of natural environments – reduction of resource potential of natural complexes, simplification of their structure

Anthropogenic load  on the environment, which negatively affects the quality of life of Kyivites

Low awareness about the state of ecosystems of the city,
its flora and fauna, as a consequence – low environmental citizenship

Biodiversity loss and landscape fragmentation

The imperfection of the legal framework in the field of treatment of pets and regulation of the number of homeless animals

Failure to consider global and regional climate change
scenarios
in urban development planning

Circular waste management

Kyiv produces 689 000 tons of household waste per year

Waste management problems
solved by Ecostrategy 2030

Significant amounts of accumulated waste with a subsequent tendency to increase

Lack of effective measures to prevent waste generation,
recycling, disposal

Improper disposal of hazardous waste

Inadequate level of waste use as a secondary raw material due to imperfect organizational and economic principles of their involvement in production

The presence  of numerous natural landfills, which
are a source of environmental danger and create a negative image of the capital of Ukraine

Disposal of household waste without taking into account possible dangerous consequences

Low level of waste sorting culture and respect
for the environment
